How to Choose Safe and Stylish Earrings for Your Baby or Child

Piercing your baby's ears is a big decision, and choosing the right earrings for her is just as important. Comfort, safety, and style should all be considered when choosing baby earrings or children’s earrings. In this guide, we’ll help you navigate the best options to ensure you pick the right ones for your precious little one.

Many parents in South Asian, Middle Eastern, Latino and African cultures (as well as many others) choose to pierce their baby’s ears at a young age as part of tradition. A pair of gold stud earrings is often the first piece of jewellery a baby girl receives, symbolising beauty and cultural heritage.

What to Look for in Baby and Children’s Earrings

Material

  • Choose children’s earrings made from high-quality gold to prevent allergic reactions. Children’s skin can be very sensitive and so it is important to choose earrings made from precious metals or titanium to ensure they are hypoallergenic.

    Design

  • Stud earrings are the most safest and practical option for young children. They is minimal risk of them catching and being pulled off. As your child gets a little older, small hoop earrings are also a good alternative.

Secure fastenings:

  • Ensure that the earrings you select have a screw-back (sometimes known as safety-back) to the earrings to prevent them from falling out or being pulled off easily during play or changing clothes. We are referring here to the back part of the earring that secures it to the ear. Many cheaper options have a push-on butterfly back, which very easily pulls off. Avoid these for babies and young children especially. Although convenient for adults, this is NOT ideal for babies and children as it can come off very easily and will either mean a lost earring or worse, a safety risk.

    Size and Weight:

  • Small, lightweight studs will ensure the earrings are comfortable and safe for little earlobes. You should avoid heavy earrings or those with a dangle design, as well as a safety risk, they are potentially damaging to the earlobe and new piercing.

Now lets talk about styles...

Best Styles for Babies and Young Children

How to Care for Your Child’s Earrings

  • Regularly clean earrings to prevent infections. There is more information on this in our Insights section and FAQs.

  • Avoid exposing earrings to harsh chemicals. Simply using warm water with a drop of mild dishwashing liquid and sift baby toothbrush are all you need to get each piece sparkling again!

  • When not being worn, keep them stored safely in jewellery box away from cold and heat.

  • Check earring fastenings regularly to ensure they remain secure. Otherwise you could risk them coming loose and losing one!
